Life in the wilderness of midwestern America in the mid-nineteenth century was tough. Philip Tome was a pioneer farmer who had survive by his wits and rely on his hunting abilities to make ends meet as brutal winters closed in. With his .45 caliber flintlock rifle he tracked and shot elk, deer, wolves, bears, panthers, foxes and other large animals throughout northern Pennsylvania. He also spent time amongst the Native Americans who lived nearby him, becoming interpreter for Cornplanter and Governor Blacksnake, Indian chiefs on the Allegheny River.
