Using live feeders for breeding birds is oftentimes the 'secret ingredient' to larger clutches, healthier babies, or even getting that finicky pair to finally breed.
Live mealworms are readily accepted by many species of finch and smaller hookbills - especially South American parakeets. Live feeders offer a more natural texture than dried feeders, as well as movement which may further entice your pairs to eat them. While mealworms and other live feeders can be offered at any time to your breeding pairs, increasing the amount and/or frequency you offer them may contribute to greater breeding success. These protein-packed, nutritious bugs can be offered to parents feeding babies, as well.

Keeping Mealworms as Feeders
Mealworms can be kept in the refrigerator to extend the amount of time they remain in a larval state. Quite often the container they arrive in is sufficient, however for larger quantities you may want to provide a slightly larger container. Fill the container with 1"-2" of oats, and provide a slice of apple or carrot. Mealworms can be kept for several weeks this way. In the fridge they won't eat much, but refresh the apple/carrot as necessary.
